PROTECCION ECOLOGICA SUBACUATICA

Was born out of the necessity to protect the waters of Acapulco and its surroundings.

This group was initiated by professional as amateur - divers, who, appalled by the condition of the bay, decided that somethig had to be done to rescue Acapulco, the show Case of Mexico towards the world.

Our aim is not only to denounce the state of affairs to the respective authorities, but to inform the citizens in general and invite them to participate actively un the decision making with those autorities who are in charge of finding solutions for the protection and conservation of our ecosystems.


OUR OBJETIVE:

To be part of the worlwide cooperation for the rescue of species in danger of extintion.

Mexico has been called the land of the turtle. WHY? Very simple: Seven of the eigtht sea - turtles come every year to lay their eggs on out beaches along the Pacific Ocean, the Mexican Gulf and the Caribic.

Having this mind, members of P.E.S., and volunteers created en 1992 the PROGRAM FOR THE PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION OF THE SEA - TURTLE.

We installed a turtle - camp on one of our beaches, where we established the exchange of information with the villager who live along this coast in order to get to know their necessities.

That way we may develop productive activities together so as to mitigate the impact our protection program has on their life style economy and basic diet, as many of these people make their living by the sale of turtle eggs.
WHAT IS A TURTLE CAMP? 

It is a storage -center for Marine turtle eggs, where the eggs are "planted" and kept unitil they hatch after 45 to 50 days.

After they hatched, the little turtle are deposited into tanks for two weeks, where they are fed and cared for, to be released into the ocean afterwards.

In this Center built for protection, conservation, investigation and information, we have created two alternative projects:
1. The creation of a Mother Plantation of coconut - palms which are resitant against the "LETAL YELLOWING" which has destroyed already large extensions of palm plantations in the Caribic and the south of Mexico.
2. This program developed with the assitance and help of SAGAR. This program hopes to reforest the beaches of Acapulco should this infection decimate the existing plantations.
3. The construction of tanks for development of acuaculture, greeding "Tilapias" a fast growing tropical sweet - water fish. On one hand we intend to exchange them for turtle - eggs, on the other hand through their commercialization we hope to obtain self-sufficiency of the camp.
4. The program of ecological dive to protect the waters of Acapulco bay and the Roqueta island


For the realization of this project we want to acknowledge the assistance of several of our government institutions as well as of the private enterprise Acapulco Divers .
